Look no further than the New Professional Program at Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific. Our program offers a unique opportunity for driven scientists and engineers to embark on a transformative journey in some of the most cutting-edge technological fields both now and into the future. As a participant in the program, you'll gain invaluable hands-on experience, access to state-of-the-art technologies, and mentorship from seasoned experts. A few of the areas we are interested in include robotics, rapid prototyping, cybersecurity, RF engineering, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and quantum. And while we are focused on hiring electrical, computer, and computer scientists, other science and engineering degrees are often considered as the U.S. Navy’s needs evolve.
From day one, you'll have opportunities to network and develop your technical and professional skills in a welcoming and diverse environment with dedicated mentorship. In your first six months, you'll explore various areas aligned with your educational background and interests. This phase includes two three-month rotations on different projects, allowing you to understand how you fit within our work, people, and teams. After completing these rotations, you’ll choose which group to join. The rest of the program features a structured developmental training curriculum, complemented by field trips around the Center, meetings with colleagues, social events, outreach activities, and lab tours, all designed to expose you to innovative work.
For the first two years of your career here, several dozen fellow New Professionals will join you while you learn the ins and outs of the Center and all the ways that NIWC Pacific serves the U.S. Navy and greater Department of Defense. These orientations come through site visits to different parts of NIWC Pacific, as well as to nearby military installations, speeches on technology and Center culture by experienced employees, and poster sessions and presentations where New Professionals can explain to each other the varied and interesting work they are doing.
To that end, there exists several research communities of interest and an internal proposal program. If you have a great idea, all you need to do is make a good pitch and you can be free to work on something you’re truly passionate about. Being a New Professional isn’t just about work. There are a wide variety of social events put on by those who help run the New Professional Program. Social events include happy hours, sporting events, hiking, and anything else the city and county have to offer. San Diego is an exciting place, and for those New Professionals not from nearby San Diego, the New Professional Program will help you explore the area and build bonds with new people and with each other.
